Packing and planning outfits was daunting enough so I stayed true to myself and kept it simple with one of my favorite (i.e. tried and true) combinations: black and white.

I apologize for being MIA the last couple days; work has been crazy and I am currently in New York for a few NYFW events (and for fun, of course). In the meantime, meet Teresa, my wonderful co-worker/friend. She sometimes snaps my blog pictures so thought it was high time I feature her! We actually went to the same college and once I started at Trunk Club, we became fast friends. She is half-Brazilian and half-Argentinian and can speak four languages fluently (jealous).

I'm really enjoying the jewelry in the Bib + Tuck Forward Fashion Project. So far, I've received two pieces that I would never pick out myself but that I really have enjoyed wearing. This double-cuff by Citrine by the Stones is a piece that Cleopatra would've been proud to wear. It's a statement bracelet for sure, so I toned it down a bit by letting it peek out of my shirt and coat. How about you--would you wear a double-cuff?

The top half of this outfit is a casual-classic while the bottom is, well, something a bit edgier. I saw these Reed Krakoff boots on sale at Saks after Christmas and was in awe by their unique and angular architecture. They'll probably be just as fun with a more fashion-forward outfit (I envision wearing them bare-legged with a pastel, knee-length skirt in the spring) but for now, I'm putting my own personal spin on them and pairing them with some classics that I wear day to day.

I don't always don a fur vest à la Cher (as my dad likes to call me when I wear it). In fact, many days, I like to keep it buttoned-up; I attribute this habit to four years of working in a corporate environment. Nowadays, I can be a little edgier with my workwear and I'm getting there...slowly but surely. To me, this outfit looks perfectly prim on top with a bottom half that's unexpected--a mini skirt with (faux) leather detailing and my tallest, black booties.

I'll admit that I'm not very adventurous when it comes to makeup. I stick with what works best for me and rarely stray unless it comes highly recommended by a friend. Since college, my skin has become increasingly sensitive and the term 'adult acne' has become unfortunately familiar*. Long gone are the days of sleeping in makeup and showing up places with a bare face. Here are a few staples that have treated me well amidst my skin's temper tantrums.

1. Bare Escentuals Foundation SPF 15 (my #1...rarely leave the house without this on)

2. L'oreal Voluminous Mascara (I've strayed but I always go back to it)

3. Bare Escentuals Bronzer in Warmth (no need for a fake tan--just a quick swipe on the cheekbones and forehead)

4. Mario Badescu Facial Spray (perfect for rehydrating skin--especially in the winter)

5. CoverGirl Lipstick in 'Spellbound' (I can't bring myself to buy expensive lipsticks and this hot-pink hue does the trick every time)

6. Laura Mercier Mineral Illuminating Powder in 'Starlight' (finishing touch for that dewy, air-brushed look)

7. MAC Lipstick in 'Crosswires' (A wonderful everyday lip color and great value for $12)

*If you have any issues with sensitivity or breakouts, I highly recommend testing out Bare Escentuals; it's a little scary making the jump from a liquid like tinted moisturizer, but I'll never go back.

Also, do you have any eyeliners you love? I've never found one I love and am always looking for suggestions!

It's week #3 of the Bib + Tuck Forward Fashion project and as you can see, it's a litte more subtle than last week's item. I thought a fur vest and a dreamcatcher necklace might be a little too 'Cher' for my taste but paired with my everyday basics like a silk top, dark cords and a striped cardigan, I think I toned it down to be more my speed. Just goes to show that you can tailor anything, no matter how outrageous, to be more your style by incorporating it into your everyday wardrobe.

Perusing spring clothes is extremely tempting right now, but sadly, such a counterproductive activity for me. Winter basically just started in Chicago and while winter coats and sweaters are on heavy markdown, it's now (and the next three months) when I'll be needing them most. If you're tempted (like me) to buy spring items right now, I suggest browsing lower-priced stores to pick up a few lighter fabrics, like this Old Navy sweater and incorporating items you already own in your wardrobe to spring-ify your outfits, like brightly colored jeans or snakeskin heels (throw them in your work bag and commute in your snow boots). Or, if you must pull the trigger, buy items you can wear now (or any season) like metallic loafers or a season-less lightweight scarf.

My Grandma's Green Beans (See Jane Make)

My grandma was a pretty incredible lady. She was a Marine during WWII, sewed like a champ, cooked a mean Thanksgiving dinner and would let me watch cable, eat bon-bons and drink Sprite when I'd stay home sick from school (sometimes my mom would take me over there if she couldn't stay home with me the whole day).

The other day I was asking my mom for her cold green bean recipe and she reminded me that they were my Grandma's recipe (she posted it to allrecipes here). Not only are they delicious (and super garlicky) but they're super simple to make and are a great way to incorporate more vegetables into your diet, rather than the standard salad at lunch. Of course, if my Grandma were still here today, she'd probably slip me some Wurther's candy or cookies before serving me vegetables--and that's why she was so great.

Why is this post untitled? Because no words can describe these pants. I have to admit that I'm out of my comfort zone in them; they're bright, wide, colorful and something I'd never choose for myself. I mentioned last week that I plan on eating breakfast in the new year and while I haven't every, single day, I'm definitely having it more regularly (as opposed to never). I thought I'd share a few more resolutions I have for 2012:

Call rather than text. While texting has become second nature, I've decided that it's time to a.) use the phone function of my device and b.) speak in actual words rather than, IDK, acronyms.
Make more conscious decisions. Whether it's choosing a bright and healthy Trop50 orange juice beverage over a bag of chips (my weakness) or buying an uber-trendy item that I'll wear once, it's time for me have less regrets.
Watch less TV. It's going to be near impossible to tear myself away from a Lifetime movie on Sunday afternoon but my books won't read themselves.
Get organized. Donate clothes. Replace donated clothes. Repeat.
Incorporate more color into my life. Food, drink, clothing, experiences, decor, etc--it's going to be a long winter and I have to fend off seasonal affective disorder (SAD--how appropriate) somehow.
Update my 'about me' section (see right). Time to admit to myself that I'm 27.

Nothing gets you through hump day like a hot pink hue. I bought this skirt on sale at the Gap with the intent of saving it for summer; however, I realized it would work for a blustery, Chicago winter (but dry) day just as well.

On a side note, wearing maxi lengths have always made me feel a bit self-conscious. As a taller gal, I have always thought they look better on my shorter friends and counterparts; I think I just look like a column in them. But, I like the aesthetic of them and it's one of those instances where my better judgement overrides my insecurities.

PS Thanks to my friend/co-worker Birdie for snapping some pics for me on our way to Walgreens! She's in head to toe J. Crew...very cute.

It was unseasonably warm for a few days last week and now as I type this, the cold gusts of wind have picked up and I'm now eating my words. 55 degrees it's not, but last Friday and Saturday it was--hence the spring-like outfit. You'll hear no complaints from me, though, as this winter has been suspiciously mild!

I'm participating in Bib + Tuck's Forward Fashion Project (check out their feature in Vogue) where 10 bloggers style 10 items over a 10-week period of time. Not only is it a great way to reuse fashion, but I'm personally excited to see how everyone incorporates their unique personalities into each piece. To kick-off, I had the opportunity to style this navy blue, silk Tibi top. I wanted to play with patterns so decided to top it off with my striped blazer from H&M along with a fun pop of color in the scarf.

...And I'm actually not wearing all black here; my pants, that don't seem to photograph well (I've tried to toy with the colors so you can actually see them!), are actually a dark burgundy/purple (worn here). Anyway, it's been quite brisk in Chicago the past few days and I made the mistake of wearing lightweight fabrics the day before. Yesterday, I deemed it necessary to pull all the stops: cords, turtleneck and fur (I think my co-workers are sick of seeing this vest). My recipe must've worked because it kept the chill away and I wasn't shivering during my commute to work.

I have a running list of New Year resolutions in my head. I'm sure many will be broken by next week and some won't even be given a sporting chance, but one I'd like to try and keep is to eat breakfast on weekdays. I tend to choose sleep over breakfast and usually resort to grabbing a soy latte to both wake me up and tide me over until lunch. There once was a time when I ate breakfast everyday (and not just brunch on the weekends) and I'd like to get back into that routine.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm much more productive when I've had a small (and quick) meal in the morning so a perfect start for me is avocado toast. Simply mash one avocado in a bowl, add the juice of a lemon, salt, pepper, spread on toast (I used a whole wheat english muffin) and sprinkle with red pepper flakes.

It's a fresh start and a whole new year, but that doesn't mean I have to leave my old favorites behind. Whenever I want to channel Betty Draper (going to the stables), I pull out this MBMJ mod-ish coat. Because the sleeves are 3/4 length and the temperatures decided to plummet overnight I felt it was necessary to pull out my long, leopard J Crew gloves to make sure all exposed skin was covered. Although you can't see it well, I'm also wearing a turtleneck which is always a winter staple for me. Turtlenecks have been getting a lot of attention lately and it just makes me question: did they ever go out of style? (no)

I had a holiday cocktail party to attend and I was in the mood for a dress (I wore this last year). I found this pleated, shift dress while looking for another dress in the depths of my closet (don't you love finding things you forgot you had?). I definitely don't belt a lot of things, but felt like it was the right thing to do in this case. I added this necklace, that I can't stop wearing (seriously, I wear it at least once a week), and a red clutch. I also wore dark plum tights to break up the black; they're dark enough that it's subtle but a nice change from my basic black tights.

On another note, can you believe Christmas is less than a week away?!

My mom called me yesterday to read a letter she found that I wrote to Santa as a kid. We both laughed so hard that we cried as she read it out loud to me over the phone. As an adult, it's easy to lose sight of the excitement of Christmas and the holiday season; I know I'm guilty of sighing to others, 'ugh, I'm so busy right now and this time of year is so crazy" but sometimes you need to take a step back, soak it in and maybe even revert back to childhood (I think this was 2nd grade) for a minute.

A couple things about this letter:

Clearly, I was pulling the guilty/admission stunt so that Santa would have some pity on my naughty self.
I'm still waiting on that Nintendo.
Santa always wrote me back (and his handwriting was awfully similar to my Dad's...)
Mom, why don't you still hang my 'paper-shavings' wreath up in your house?

I love peruse secondhand shops and thrift stores, but mostly for household items and decor (my sister recently got china similar to my Kate Spade set for $14). Nothing beats sifting through racks for hidden treasures; unfortunately, I usually come up short on the clothing end. I'm probably not the best at treasure hunting because I usually have a set item in mind; more recently, I was determined to get a leather pencil skirt. Well, I didn't find one, but I did find a cream-colored, wool Christian Dior skirt that fit like a glove...for $5. Seems like an okay trade-off, no?

Imagine my excitement when my wedding photographer (and cousin) told me that he submitted our wedding to Style Me Pretty and they had plans to publish it! As an avid reader of SMP both long before and still long after Eric and my's engagement, it is an honor to be selected. I never considered myself a crafty person but was so inspired by the weddings that I was determined to give some projects a go. Yesterday was easily one of the coldest days of the season so far. Sure, I know it's going to get much chillier than what it is now, but those first few days are the hardest. They're the sort of days that you wonder why you aren't wearing gloves or why you didn't wear long johns under your pants. Funnily enough, I chose to wear a lightweight leather jacket and dress with tights on this frigid day; luckily, I wore my warmest, plaid scarf and an extra layer of fur (it helps, I swear--it's not fashion but more so function at this point) to stave off the cold.

One of the bests aspects of living in Chicago is the abundance of newly sprouted boutiques, restaurants and other fun shops; it's nearly impossible to be bored! I was recently introduced to The Edit by Alex (she designed the store--it's nothing short of beautiful) and paid a visit there last week. I'm really not much of an impulse shopper, but when I saw this skirt on sale for Black Friday, I quickly made a game time decision. I suppose it's not much of an impulse purchase though, because I've been scouring sales and eBay for a similar skirt for the past six months. The leather is so buttery and soft; it will definitely be a piece that gets better with time. This is one of those items that I think to myself, 'I am totally passing this skirt down to my daughter.' And then I realize by the time this future daughter would be able to wear it, we'll probably all be wearing metallic spacesuits and have flying cars.

How impossible is it to shop for men? Personally, I think it's quite tough. Clothing always comes to mind (for me at least) as it's such an interest of mine, but it can be tedious to pick it out for them.

As you may know, I work for Trunk Club in Chicago. My life currently revolves around men's clothing; I'm constantly packing up trunks to be shipped to men and styling my clients that are in Chicago. If there's any holiday that allows for (somewhat) relaxation, it's Thanksgiving. Sure, preparations can be tedious and clean up is a pain, but for the most part, I like to lounge, relax and remember that its only Thursday and that the weekend has just begun. I wore this to Thanksgiving with my family with function in mind: stretchy pants (easy to move but comfortable enough to lay around), a cozy scarf (that doubles as a blanket for when I crash on the couch), layers (it can get hot in the kitchen but cold in the living room), and warm socks (I take my shoes off as soon as I get in the door).

Another year has come and gone. I turn 27 today and honestly, I can't believe how time flies. I won't wax on about how old I feel because I actually feel the same as when I was a mere 18 years old (except hangovers are way worse now). 26 was a crazy and wonderful year; I got married, changed jobs and traveled halfway around the world. I can only hope and pray that 27 treats me just as kind.

I really like to cook. I'm okay at best, but it's something I genuinely enjoy doing. I like having the freedom of adding spices and ingredients as I please (I don't follow directions that well so baking doesn't always turn out so well for me). When I go grocery shopping with Eric, I always ask him think of something new he wants to eat and recently he requested mashed potatoes. I decided to turn it in to a complete dinner by making a variation of Shepherd's Pie (used this recipe but changed a few things--no parsnips for one). I used ground beef instead of the traditional lamb and added lots of veggies like zucchini, mushrooms and red peppers.

I debuted the glitter boots this past Friday. Although I sprayed a craft adhesive all over them (several times), I still left a glitter trail throughout the day. It's really a small price to pay, though, for such fun boots that I can take pride in knowing I did them myself.

Some craft projects make me want to give up, but this time I was on a mission. These glitter booties, while simple, didn't turn out how I had intended--probably because I did them with the wrong glitter first time around. I can admit when something I did was subpar and part one was just that. I planned going to go back and fill in the holes with chunkier glitter, but decided to just peel it all off (seriously) and start from scratch. The end result? Much better glitter booties.

I loved my vegetables growing up, yet spaghetti squash always repulsed me. Stringy, with a crunch, yet somehow soggy at the same time--it was the stuff of spooky Halloween parties (you know what I'm talking about). Once fall was in full force, I would look around suspiciously at the decorative gourds and squashes that my mom displayed and wonder which ones she was going to make us eat.

I've since reacquainted myself with spaghetti squash and this time, it's love. With a little olive oil, fresh ground pepper, sea salt and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese, spaghetti squash has become a fall staple of mine (cut in half and bake for an hour at 400 degrees). I'm excited to try new recipes but for now I'm pleased enough with the fact that I can eat it without missing actual noodles.

The only thing I can think of when I see this outfit is that I wore something similar for my 1st grade pictures. It was my favorite outfit that year: a thick, knit mustard cardigan with a black turtleneck underneath plus black culottes, tights and oxfords. It's one of my favorite school pictures, probably because the next six years consisted of a bad haircut and huge glasses (sorry Mom, you know it's true). Yes, first grade was a bittersweet year for me--I started out with my favorite outfit early and ended the year with glasses that overtook my face.

Glitter Boots - Part I (See Jane DIY)

There's a story behind these sparkly kicks. First, my friend at work saw a picture of glitter booties and proceeded to order some from Victoria's Secret. She told me she wasn't in love with them (since she wanted a lower heel and brown/gold colors) and luck would have it that I found this DIY project (originally done here). We excitedly told each other we'd work together to make the perfect glitter booties. Fast forward ten days later and we find ourselves at a Starbucks near work, wreaking havoc while passersby chuckle at us and the glittery mess we made. They're far from perfect, but regardless, the end result is pretty cool.

I told myself that no matter how appealing, I was going to lay off buying pencil skirts since I don't have to wear such formal pieces work my new job. However, once I laid my eyes on this stretchy, little gem of a skirt, all bets were off. The skirt has more of an edge that your typical, tailored pencil skirt which is why I decided it was a good purchase. I foresee many more wears out of this into the winter with tights and maybe a fur vest. (A rule of thumb before I purchase anything is I imagine wearing it least two or three different ways--it helps me buy things with a little longevity.)

When you marry someone, it's only fair that you'll have to expose yourself to some of their interests (and that they do the same for you). Enter football: Eric and his family share a fervent love for the Steelers. I think the game in itself alright (and actually grew up with Browns and Lions fans), but I've never been a huge fan. (However, the dips, and other various snack foods, are something that I can really get behind.)

I spent this past weekend in Pittsburgh with Eric and my in-laws for the game on Sunday. Pittsburgh is a charming city that's chock full of American history (plus, it's the most recent Gotham City in the newest Batman movie) and I always like to visit a city that I've never been (any travel is good travel in my eyes). I enjoyed strolling around, learning about a new city and of course, eating $8 nachos at an NFL game.

As a style blogger, it's easy to get caught up in the trends of the moment. Often, I'll see what hot item is floating around twitter, tumblr or other bloggers' wish lists and soon enough, I'll be lusting after it, too. I try not to not be an impulse shopper--but that's not to say I haven't snatched something up in the heat of the moment and worn it once, never to be seen again. Bags, however, are something that I think long and hard about before buying. Before I purchase a bag, I want to ensure that I will love it, 2, 5, and even 30 years down the road. In fact, I often envision passing it down to my future daughter or niece; I want a bag that will withstand the sands of time. There should be no question why these three bags are on my list of investment bags--ones that will last a lifetime.

I feel as if these boots and I started out on the wrong food (pun intended). First off, I bought them at a Zara in Europe last summer and when I saw them in my local store, they were about $30 less than what I paid (I'm not sure why I didn't think that they'd be available in the States and cheaper due to the exchange rate, for that matter). Next, I came to realize that these innocent-looking wedges were excruciatingly painful (disclaimer: I'm somewhat of a baby when it comes to uncomfortable shoes). I had given up hope until the kind ladies at Stiletto Hardware sent me some cushions for my shoes.

When I wore these wedges the other day, I had only walked a few blocks when I was ready to give up all hope. I got on the train and inserted the ball-of-foot cushions into my boots (I couldn't wait until I got to work and luckily it was empty) and, I kid you not, ended up wearing the shoes all day in pure comfort. I even went straight out after work and hardly noticed that I was wearing the boots all day/night. I think I'll be able to revive other uncomfortable shoes that are sitting in my closet from here on out. (PS. Anh from 9to5Chic uses them too!)

One of the best parts of fall is undoubtedly the food. When I think of fall, the first thing I think of is apples, pumpkins, comfort foods and the tasty snacks that are served at football gatherings. Sure, I love the cozy knits and sweaters, but I usually envision myself wrapped in one while sipping a delicious drink and stuffing myself with heart food.

The ever replicated spinach artichoke dip (served hot, please) is at the top of my dip list. There are so many variations on this classic recipe and I've only met a few I haven't liked. I used this recipe, but there's always room for improvement. I haven't quite found my holy grail recipe just yet.

I can't thank you all enough for your kind and encouraging words regarding my recent career change. It's a big change but I'm ready and excited for a change of pace. I know I'll be working a lot of late nights and scrambling to get new clients (which, by the way, if you know of a guy in your life that may be interested or just want me to answer any questions--just email me!)

Anyway, I mentioned that the new job doesn't really have a dress code but I definitely won't be shaking my button-up and cardigan collection that I've acquired over the years. The skirt is shorter than I'm used to at work, but it's fun to be able to wear it all day. It'll take me awhile (or never) to stop my business casual tendencies; old habits die hard.

PS. Did you notice my sad, little basil plant in the first picture? It died while on my honeymoon...probably time to get rid of it, eh?

A New Venture (See Jane Work)

You might have seen my tweets about my last day at work and a change in career. I started this week at a men's fashion start-up called the Trunk Club. I will be doing styling and sales and it's a major change from my past job and background (I was a finance major in college) but am totally excited to embark on this new venture.

Trunk Club aims to change the traditional shopping process for men who don't love shopping or lack the time to do so. We personally handpick clothes (similar brands to those found at Nordstrom) to send a guy based on their preferences and personality. Because shipping is free (both directions), we treat it as a rinse and repeat process; if we didn't quite get the style or fit with the first trunk, we'll send another along. There's no risk to the customer as they only pay for what they keep.

I've never been a huge fan of silky, button-down shirts until the past year or so. Plus, when a blouse has a leopard print like this one, it's impossible to feel like a pre-pubescent boy when wearing it.

Layering your clothes is one way to make your style unique and also useful for in-between weather months. Too hot? I took this layer jacket off and then once I stepped outside, it was chilly so I put it back on. Of course, I wore this last week when the weather was in the 50s and this week it's been a lot warmer so I'm not exactly practicing what I'm preaching. Regardless, layers are essential when it's not quite summer, but not quite fall--don't you think?

When the weather is still warm, the thought of fall is completely romanticized. Business casual isn't all pencil skirts and cardigans--at least, it doesn't have to be. A slim pair of pants paired with a silky blouse is just as professional as an oxford and skirt. To edge it up (I push the limits in the corporate world), I added leather cutout booties and a bright fuchsia scarf. A slim, cropped pair of pants may be one of the most versatile items in a wardrobe. Whether dressed up at work with this olive blouse or down on the weekend with an over-sized blouse and ballet flats, I wear them more than I'd like to admit and find myself always gravitating towards them when I'm running late before work.

I was jet-lagged for quite some time upon returning from Bali. Labor Day weekend was a blur--I was waking up at 2AM and passing out by 9AM--sleeping throughout the day. It was definitely the worst case of jet-lag I'd ever experienced. My sister stopped over one day to find me sleeping on the couch and had an intervention. She made me get up and walk around with her (it was a beautiful day) in hopes that I would liven up a bit. Turns out, a little fresh air can work wonders. The weather was crisp and felt like the beginning of fall--the perfect remedy for my tired soul. Big sisters usually know best, right?

Now that it's September, I'm being inundated with fall and winter fashion so naturally I have another warm weather outfit to share. Visiting Bali was my first time in the southern hemisphere and due to its proximity equator, it was hot. This outfit is pure summer, but I do plan on wearing this maxi skirt into fall with a cropped sweater and flats, which is just about the only piece of this outfit that can be carried into the cold weather. Sadly, even my tan has already peeled off. That was quick.

Bali is a magical place. The postcard-like landscape is made up of beaches, volcanoes and rice paddies; it's like every moment is an opportunity for another perfect picture. The food is spicy, colorful and (of course) delicious. Seafood is in abundance and a special chili sauce that awakes the taste-buds (with a jackhammer) is accompanied with fried noodles and rice. Most of all, the people are kind, gracious and geniunely friendly. The Balinese are extremely family-oriented and religion is at the forefront of their lives. Throughout their days, they make offerings, work, spend time with their families all while with a great, big grin on their faces. I found that the Balinese love to chat with tourists and as one, I found that very refreshing. I'm so glad and grateful that we were able to spend our honeymoon there and it was a trip that won't be forgotten. Here's to hoping that I'll be able to return someday.

Hi, everyone--it's good to be back in the USA. I hope you enjoyed the guest bloggers and loved their stylish posts as much as I did (seriously, thank you to Jentine, Meghan, Helena, Laura, Krystal, Audrey and Andrea!).

I bought this dress for my wedding rehearsal dinner back in May and had high hopes for frequent opportunities to wear it throughout the summer. As the months passed, it moved farther back into my closet. In a last minute packing frenzy, I threw it in my suitcase for the honeymoon. The dress fit in perfectly with the island atmosphere--flowing and breezy with each step. Turns out, this dress is perfect for Mexico and Bali; unfortunately for me, it would have been great for Chicago all summer as well. I'll definitely try and wear it a bit more next summer, however, I know I'll be holding on to it for years to come--if only for the sentimental value.

It's nice to be back and I can't wait to show you some snippets of Bali!

Hello lovely See Jane readers! Krystal from This Time Tomorrow here. When Ms. Anna asked me to keep her seat warm while she and her husband enjoy newlywed bliss in Bali (let's all take a moment of jealousy here!) I jumped at the opportunity. It's always warms my heart to see two people so happy together and I wish them both a wonderful time as they official kick off their marriage!

As for myself, I'm enjoying (yes, enjoying) yet another bipolar weather shift here in San Francisco. While most other parts of the country are sweltering from mid-August heat, I've already started vamping up my fall wardrobe because, well, San Francisco summer is nonexistent. For this outfit in particular, I'm excited to start incorporating the bright pops of color I've accumulated over the summer for colorblocking and now wearing them with fall neutrals. These chartreuse Miu Mius are a perfect example to pack some punch to an otherwise black, white and camel outfit. (And let's not forget the secret weapon: poppy orange lipstick! Can't leave the house without it!)

Hello lovely See Jane. readers! As a huge fan of Anna's blog, it is a real honor to be posting here while she's off on her honeymoon. Before I say much else, it would probably make sense to introduce myself. My name is Laura and my blog is OnTheRacks...I like to talk about fashion and post outfit photos for the most part, with an occasional side note about my dog, Lola, or drinking wine.

You're probably wondering why I'm dressed for winter in the middle of August, and the reason for this is I live in San Francisco! Those of you have been here understand, right?! For those of you who haven't, 60 degrees or lower 95% off of the year just about sums it up. Not that I'm complaining! :)

These photos were shot smack dab in the middle of downtown. Outside of the Contemporary Jewish Museum to be exact, where they just so happened to be teaching public dance lessons (kind of a trip)! It was cool to see passerby’s just joining right on in. My boyfriend Blake and I watched and enjoyed, but no dancing for me. That requires at least 2 drinks…at which point I typically start to think I’m awesome and flail around like a hippie. I get my moves from my dad who takes that "dance like nobody's watching" phrase a little too literally.

I can’t wait to find the perfect one. I love this 3.1 Phillip Lim number, but also have my

Polka Dots- We all most likely have polka dots already hanging in our closets (this is
my favorite polka-dotted number that I own), but I love the idea of displaying them in
unexpected places such as these ladylike shorts layered with contrasting tights.

Signature Silk Blouse- If taken full advantage of, a button down silk blouse may just be
the most versatile item you’ll own this fall. I love the way this Equipment blouse takes
the summer nautical trend into the next season.

Leather Skirt- Whether you’re feeling more of a mini or a midi skirt this fall, grab
yourself a leather one for style that will go on all season and well into winter.

Tuxedo Jacket- I’m loving the look of a more tailored tuxedo jacket this fall rather than
your average blazer. With a structured white blouse and sequin shorts or aforementioned
leather mini, you’re ready for any event your fall social calendar may call for.

Bold Trouser- I’m predicting structured trousers to be one of the number one trends of
this fall. They are already popping up in street style all over and I’m excited for the pants
in saturated hues to be seen everywhere from the offices to cocktails with girlfriends. A
red pair, in particular, like these from Cynthia Rowley, will go a long way.

Detachable Collar- Arguably one of the oddest trends to be popping up, these little collars
also have a lot of potential in my mind. They are a great way to change up some of your
more spring and summer pieces as you transition into the new season.

Statement Necklace- We all probably have oodles of statement necklaces at this point,
but I love this one in particular for being in gold and featuring the knot I believe that will
be more prevalent in this coming season’s accessories.

Suede Booties- If you’re investing in new footwear for fall, make it a pair of suede
booties in a neutral color. You could even begin wearing them now with flirty summer
dresses and then have them be a reliable go-to in your closet when it comes to comfort
and style. These TopShop ones are currently on my wish list.

I'm leaving for my honeymoon today and in the meantime, some of my favorite bloggers will be filling in for me. To kick things off, we have the gorgeous (and hilarious) Jentine of My Edit.

Anna's recent post about dressing down a more formal dress got me thinking about my little fancy dress corner in the closet. It's a happy place. A few years ago Matt and I were going to a plethora (I will never get tired of using that word) of weddings each summer and I took every opportunity to get dressed up. I almost took it for granted. Sadly, the number of invites have since slowed down (we're getting older... or smellier) and I just wear these dresses to company Christmas parties or to dust my house on a Friday night. I try not to dust my house, so, usually the dresses just hang quietly in the closet.

But those fancy items in my closet are some of my favourite things and it's a pity they don't get out more. It's especially a pity that this glamourous sequin skirt doesn't see the light of day. The last time I wore it was my brother's wedding in Holland (hence the cow pictures) two years ago and I felt ridiculous, over the top and awesome all day long. I love this skirt and I would love a chance to wear it again. Maybe I just need to do what Anna did and throw a chambray shirt over it. You only live once, and you might as well be sparkly.

I almost forgot about these pictures that Emma from Tres Awesome took of me a few weeks ago when we met at Tangerine. I really love this dress and have worn it more times than I originally thought I would (it's quite bright, no?). To change it up, I paired it with my grandma's gold flower belt and my go-to summer sandals.

I'm off to Kansas City this weekend to celebrate a friend's wedding and then will be leaving for our honeymoon on Monday. I'm a great procrastinator and can shamefully admit that I haven't packed a thing. I think I'll pack this dress.

I'm leaving for my honeymoon on Monday and am trying to mentally prepare myself for the long haul ahead. When deciding on a destination, Eric and I chose the farthest place that my airlines miles would take us; enter: Bali. With three flights and well over 21 hours on a plane ahead of me, it's safe to say that I'm a little anxious about such lengthy journey. Then, I shake my head and realize that I'm going to Bali and all is well with the world again.

Several books, magazines and movies will keep me company on the flights, but what's most important is what I wear on the plane. I'm not a huge fan of wearing my pajamas to the airport, perhaps all the years of corporate business travel trained me out of that. Instead, I look for comfortable yet wearable pieces that I will be able to wear throughout my trip (my motto is to pack light so you can bring more home).

1. J. Crew Stripe Sweater - Planes are freezing. Even in the summer.
2. Missoni Patterned Cashmere/Silk scarf - I much prefer cuddling up to my own scarves rather than scratchy, airline pillows.
3. The Row Curved-Square Sunglasses - When you step off the plane after 20+ hours of traveling, trust me, the darker the better.
4. Evian Mist - Even if it is just water in a spray bottle, it makes you feel luxurious (even if you're in the last row by the restrooms).
5. Candy/Magazines - Self-explanatory.
6. Skullcandy Roc Nation Headphones - Because they're cuter than the Bose headset on the guy in business class.
7. Proenza Schouler PS1 Keep All - A dream tote but could definitely hold my contact solution along with computer and magazines.
8. Sperry Gold Topsider - My dad always told me to wear closed-toe shoes on planes and I still do to this day.
9. Splendid Leggings - Leggings, though just a step up from sweatpants, are a Godsend for traveling women.

Chicago Architecture (See Jane Tour)

About a month ago, I went on the Chicago Architecture Tour. If you're visiting during summer
or if you live in Chicago and have yet to take one, I highly recommend it. Our fair city has unique
buildings along with some great history. Although I've lived here for four years now, it seems that
I'm just now getting a feel for Chicago (I've spent the larger part of my years here traveling during
the week, so it never quite felt like home) and that I still have a lot to learn.

Even though other cities, like New York, San Francisco and London, really capture my heart
and I love them more than most, I'm starting to realize that Chicago is actually a pretty good
place to live.

I hate it when I buy an item, like a dress, that only gets worn once or a handful of times. I bought
this dress for a wedding in June and slowly but surely it was pushed to the back of my closet.
During a slight panic while furiously looking for something else, I rediscovered the said dress and
determined to make it work for a more casual evening out. Chambray and a wide leather belt
instantly dress anything down and this dress was no exception. The palette was soft and feminine
and the chambray and leather toughened it up a bit.

In related news, I met up with my San Francisco friend, Anh, on Saturday night along with Taylor, Audrey and Jennifer. Anh and I became friends when I was traveling out to San Fran every week for work and it was so fun to have her in my neck of the woods.

Clearly, it's not fall yet, but the weather has some other ideas. It was so cool out today that it really threw me for a loop. Coincidence would have it that Refinery29 Chicago asked me to pick out five must-haves for fall. I am an avid Mad Men viewer (highly recommended...get the DVDs and start from the beginning), so when Banana Republic contacted me to wear a piece from their Mad Men Fall '11 Collection, I jumped at the chance. I feel a little Joan in this and if I had an up-do, then I'd definitely be channeling Betty (sorry Peggy). Clearly, I love the story lines of Mad Men, but the costumes draw me in as well; I've even found myself taking some dressing cues from the ladies. Since I work in a corporate environment, I love a good pencil skirt, à la Joan Holloway. This trench speaks (volumes) for itself, so I felt simple was the way to go. Black cigarette pants and plain, nude pumps--I think Betty would be proud, no?

As you may know, I painted my room a couple weeks ago and while doing so, learned a few things about myself in the process. First, I need to work out. I made a few rolls with the extended roller and Eric decided that he could push harder. He could and he did...time to get back to the gym. Next, I'm more of a 'paint the trim' kinda gal. I have more patience when it comes so small nooks and crannies, so the trade-off worked out well. Lastly, I'm a pretty good taper and I really enjoyed doing it. I may never know why I found it so therapeutic.

Although I painted, please still consider this photo a "before" shot. I plan on doing a little more decorating and will be sure to share an "after" (so far I have a bed, dresser, night stands...yeah, that's it). Also, the lighting makes it look a bit taupe-y here, but I assure you it's very gray.

Maybe it's due to the fact that I get chilled easily or perhaps it's because I like to cover up my neck (I love turtlenecks and I'm not sorry), but I've never been one to walk away from a scarf. I picked up this printed gem from a street vendor in NYC three years back. It was around $5 and I have been wearing it off and on since; it's one of those cheap, impulse buys that you're glad you made every time you put it on. I felt a bit like a boyscout in this outfit--the faded blue shorts with a loosely tied scarf. I wasn't a boyscout (obviously), but I do know how to tie a square knot, as pictured here: right over left and under, then left over right and under, in case you're curious.

I own a panama straw hat and have a difficult time bringing myself to wear it in public (I wore it here in Mexico and thought it looked funny, but hey, it was vacation). I envy everyone on the street in their straw and lightweight hats during the summer. How do they wear them so naturally? Perhaps I'm a victim of my own self-consciousness or perhaps I really can't pull off these hats.

For example, I was going to wear this hat to Pitchfork but took a quick look at the camera and opted against it (as seen here).

not a fan.

...but i like it from this angle.

Anyone else have a complex about wearing certain things?

Maybe I'll throw my inhibitions aside this weekend and wear my hat proudly!

Lucky Style Collective (See Jane In Great Company)

I am honored to be part of the Lucky Style Collective, an initiative where bloggers and the magazine are teaming up. It sounds like a great way to mix the print and digital worlds and I can't wait to begin some collaborations with the magazine. Lucky has been a favorite of mine since I was in high school (and I still have some old ones laying around in my parents' house in my old bedroom to prove it).
